CASRAI Classifications


The importance of implementing a coherent and complete classification system of university research became obvious during the development of the project CARTE DES COMPÉTENCES EN RECHERCHE AU QUÉBEC. It was felt that to reflect the dynamism of university research, this system should distinguish between disciplinary fields research subjects and areas of application.
In this perspective, the ministère du Développement économique et régional and the Québec granting agencies (Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies, Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture, Fonds québécois de la recherche en santé du Québec), together with the researchers of the Canadian Science and (CCSII) Consortium on Science and Innovation Indicators Consortium, have joined in the effort to devise a common classification system, that
could be integrated within a few years in their respective information
In addition to the main partners, many ministries and organizations have studied the project and made recommendations : ministère de l'Éducation, Institut de la Statistique du Québec, Conseil de la science et de la technologie, Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec, ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux. Several scientists and experts have also helped to carry out the checking of the grids.
The study was based on about thirty existing classification systems, at the national and international levels. Three dimensions have been retained for the new classification : disciplinary fields, research subjects and areas of application.
The discipline is a field of knowledge which is taught in the university, where it is institutionalized (at the department or faculty level). It can describe both the training of the researcher and the field of research projects.
The research subject is a natural, technological or social phenomenon looked into with the help of science tools. It can be a specialty within a discipline, or the meeting ground of many a discipline. The area of application can be seen from the angle of a problem, whose different aspects (scientific, social, economic, cultural, or political) can be
emphasized in research. Many disciplines and research subjects can contribute, directly of indirectly, to the problem-solving process.
