Attending higher education is today a goal for many young people who
finish their secondary education, as well as for adults who are already working, and
want to further and certify their skills. Due to this diversity of students, it is impor
tant to study their expectations at the moment they access Higher Education, given
the relevance of this variable to explain the degrees of academic engagement and
success. Accordingly, this paper presents academic expectations as a central varia-
ble in the transition to Higher Education and for the assessment of the quality of
students’ adaptation in the first year. After a theoretical conceptualization, we des-
cribe the assessment measures of expectations that have been internationally more
used and the results of studies that explain the contributions of expectations to the
quality of adaptation and of the academic success of Higher Education students
